Natural Highs: Supplements, Nutrition, and Mind-Body Techniques to Help You Feel Good All the Time

Worth the read just for the first number of chapters: Has really helped!
This book is worth it to read the first 3 or so chapters. The dietary and supplement recommendations she made have really helped. I did not subscribe to the new age hooey in later chapters. If she had stopped after the vitamin and supplement chapters, I would have given it 5 stars. I did love that she tries to stay away from prescription drugs, even as a psychiatrist, and only uses them when absolutely necessary. She has a vast knowledge on the working of the brain, neurotransmitters, and how to treat depression, OCD, and other chemical imbalances without drugs and their side effects.

glad I bought a used copy
The book fails, rather deceives on 2 counts:1. It's not a book about natural "highs", at best it's a book about general well being. If the authors think that you can get a high-like feeling on amino acids, vitamins, etc., then they've either never experienced a high, or they're deliberately misleading you to buy their book. It's not to say that drugs that give you a high are wonderful or some such, it's just that the book title and its claims are downright deceitful. And yes, it is indeed possible to get a natural high, meaning, a high without bad side-effects in the short or long term, as far as the scientific knowledge goes; but this book doesn't get into any of those.2. At about two-thirds into the book, it talks about NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique). And here I quote: "The practitioner uses an indicator muscle, like the shoulder muscle, and pushes down on the person's arm while the subject is holding a substance extract (usually in a tiny glass vial) in the other hand to determine if it causes his or her energy to strengthen or weaken." Just transcribing that here makes me want to go wash my hands. I couldn't believe what I was reading. Is it possible that the book is actually making fun of the technique? No my dear, it in fact characterizes the technique as "very helpful". Instead, it's more like the authors are mocking the reader's intelligence. People like these authors should be constitutionally banned from possessing or accessing any writing instruments! And I'm only half joking as I say that.

Brain chemistry and how you can impact it
Are you interested in how the brain works in relation to moods, stress, anxiety, depression? I have been interested in this topic for some time but have struggled to get my hands on solid, detailed information about safe natural ways to address those issues - until I got a hold of "Natural Highs". This book addresses the 'why's' and 'how's' of brain chemistry - and how you can powerfully impact this by what you put into your body - good or bad! Highly recommended!

Very pleased with my purchase
I am very happy I bought this book.I've read books that handled on serotonine and dopamine before, but this book is so extensive and varied...It explains very well what kind of effect certain substances have on your body and mind and also why we 'selfmedicate with alcohol, chocolat, coffee... and why in the long run those are no good for you.More importantly, it hands you alternatives that are healthy and nonaddictive.I'm going to recommend this book to everyone that I know!

Good book.
This was a good book, now its just implimenting the ideas into real live, lots of insipartional ways to look at using natural ingredients for quitiing addictions.
