good book, good for my research on homosexuality in Victorian England. Very witty, easy to read and understand but also brings to light interesting issues.

As someone with a voracious appetite for academic literature on 19th-century Europe, 'Strangers' did not disappoint. Beautifully written, superbly researched, and sprinkled with humor, I breezed through this book with delight. Highly recommended to anyone seeking a tantalizing glimpse into a broad range of matters related to homosexuality in the not-so-distant past.

I first encountered Robb as an author in his book on France, and was fascinated by the informative, interesting and well-written account -- truly fascinating and unusual. When I saw this book, I thought "why not?", and enjoyed it as much as I did his previous book. I thought I knew much about the subject matter, professionally and personally, but (like his France book), he approaches issues from a fascinating and sometimes oblique angle. Excellent
